Commissions
Benjamin A. Vierling is available for a variety of commissions, including: album covers, portraits, still-lifes, silkscreen posters, book & magazine illustrations, and other applications.
Each project is approached as an opportunity to create a image of exceptional merit, befitting the unique needs of the patron. The media and formatting are tailored to the application. All images are rendered in traditional media, on panel, canvas, or paper. Egg tempera, oil, gouache, watercolor, graphite, & ink may all be employed to craft the final image.
Time scheduling and cost will vary, depending on the project. Images may be contracted for license usage, and also to own. Certain formats, such as portraiture and album art, are somewhat standardized and are discussed at greater length below.
For general inquiries, or to discuss a specific project, please contact the artist. All questions are welcome.
Album Covers
Original Album Cover artworks may be created in a variety of media for image license use. The process typically begins with a discussion regarding the particular needs of the client, and the visual requirements of the project. Care is given to thematic nuance and symbolic relevance.
The process of creation generally requires three months, from verification of the composition, to the delivery of the final image file to the client. A detailed preliminary sketch of the concept is submitted for approval before work begins on the painted image. Visual updates are provided to the client throughout the creation process.
All artwork is retained by the artist, but special arrangements can be made for collectors or clients who wish to own the original.
Cover artworks begin at a set rate for one square-format image. Additional images, for the obverse of the cover, or for other aspects of the presentation, may also be created per the needs of the project. To discuss scheduling availability, or to inquire about album artwork in general, please contact the artist.
Portraits
Portraits are rendered in the renaissance inspired, Misch technique of layering egg tempera & oil paints on panel. Special attention is given to the countenance of the individual, environmental color nuances, and to the inclusion of elements that have allegorical significance to the sitter.
The process typically begins with a discussion regarding the unique needs of the patron, followed by several sittings during which references are collected, and the composition is refined. A detailed preliminary drawing precedes the painting. The painting process is completed through several distinct phases of production, which are shared with the patron. The complex nature of the technique requires a minimum of a year’s time to bring a portrait to completion. The final product is an heirloom quality artifact suitable for posterity.
Commissioning an original portrait begins at a set rate for a traditional bust composition in a 16” x 20” format. Larger scenes, with multiple elements & subjects are possible, and the costs will vary depending the requirements of the patron. For additional information please contact the artist.
