“ Having rejected all else, these people had come here decades before and fashioned their homes from only that which the land provided, eschewing all forms of ‘civilization.’ Here were men and women colored as the very mantle of the earth - as soil and leaves, as wood and stone. Their visages and movements were contiguous with the land, to such a degree that even in relative close proximity, only the keenly discerning would know that that they were looking at people, and not a meadow or a ravine.”

D. A. Schulke . The Green Mysteries.

Even in Arcadia, there am I. So reads the memorial inscription on a crumbling tomb, inadvertently discovered by shepherds in a beguiling grove, amidst the idyllic rural landscape. An enigmatic pall descends, darkening the luster of the enchanted wood. Who erected this archaic monument, and whose corporal shell is interred within? The poets of ancient Rome pondered this query in brooding prose, rendered eloquent by Virgil in his Eclogues, wherein the pastoral utopia of the Great God Pan is tempered by cognizance of the ephemeral nature of all things.

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. - Genesis 28:12

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. - John 1:51

But yet it is not possible for me either to hold my peace, or not to hold my peace touching these my fortunes. For having bestowed boons upon mortals, I am enthralled unhappy in these hardships. And I am he that searched out the source of fire, by stealth borne-off inclosed in a fennel-rod, which has shown itself a teacher of every art to mortals, and a great resource. Such then as this is the vengeance that I endure for my trespasses, being riveted in fetters beneath the naked sky. - Prometheus Bound. - Æschylus . 6th century BC

‘The Homo Signorum, or Man of Signs, is a curious figure which appears in medieval astrological manuscripts. Known as the Melothesic Man or Moon’s Man in astrological medicine, it shows the signs of the zodiac on the specific parts of the body over which tradition has given them rulership. The Vierling melothesia demonstrates the hermetic ‘as above, so below’ motif, wherein the microcosm has correspondence with the macrocosm. The emblem further reflects this with the serpent biting its tail, bringing to mind the ouroboros in the Codex Marcianus, which is accompanied by the Greek phrase EN TO PAN, or ALL in ALL.’

~ William Kiesel. - Author, Galley Owner, and Publisher.

Sacred Heart. Egg tempera & oil on panel. 2011.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is an original egg tempera & oil painting, exhibited in the autumn of 2011 at the Cologne Art Fair, and in the Storytellers show, Strychnin Gallery, Berlin, Germany.

The painting appears on the cover of Veneficium: Magic, Witchcraft, and the Poison Path, authored by Daniel Schulke. The image features the emergence of Belladonna, Henbane and Datura, comprising a part of the so-called ‘Witches’ Garden’, from a human heart. The composition takes its cue from classical botanical renderings and the Vanitas tradition.

  • 6 color lithographic prints.

  • 16" x 20" format on archival coated stock.

  • Limited edition of 250, signed and numbered.

  • Published in cooperation with Three Hands Press, California.

The cyclical function of the heart is relevant here, pumping life in and out through its undulating rhythm. The intention was to elaborate on the expiating function of the Sacred Heart devotion; the assimilation of baneful poisons is catalyzed by passion and manifests as visionary power. The Heart is a crucible wherein the transformation takes place. The outpouring of virtue and venom sustains a diverse menagerie of small creatures. There are 13 individual species represented amongst the foliage and flowers. Their activities and interactions speak of the complex web of life that sustains them all, the Sacred Heart at the center.
